How to install Drupal 7 on HostGator

The situation: Drupal 7 has a little bit improved graphics installer, so the installation should be relatively easy, similar to the Drupal 6. But Drupal 7 also uses the new PDO dependency to connect to its database tables. And there could be a problem when you would like to install Drupal 7 on HostGator webhosting.

Just yesterday I found Drupal 7 alpha 6 is out so I went to install it to my testing subdomain and take some screenshots for maxiorel.cz website. However there was a problem. Although Drupal websites run on HostGator without any problem, the Drupal 7 won't to install. It told I need the PDO support to be enabled.

So when I checked the phpinfo() the was PDO enabled. It seems that there is a problem with server configuration, but it may be the Drupal 7 doesn't detect the PDO support correctly yet.

Drupal 7 and HostGator

But the solution how to install Drupal 7 on HostGator exists and is very easy. All you have to do is edit the php.ini file in your website's root folder. It should be present already because for every Drupal installation on HostGator you have to create php.ini and provide a line with:

register_globals = Off

To be able to install and run Drupal 7 on HostGator I added two more lines, so my php.ini for Drupal 7 installation now looks like this:

register_globals = Off
extension=pdo.so
extension=pdo_mysql.so

So edit your php.ini file, paste it to the Drupal 7's folder, reload the installer and go on.

My tip: HostGator is very reliable webhosting good for Drupal powered websites. For a small fee you get unlimited domains in one account, regular backups, SSH support and powerful administration via the cPanel. If you will create a new account, you can use polzerswcom as the coupon code to get $9.94 off the regular price.
